New York City at Christmas Time: A Magical Week in the Big Apple

One week before Christmas, I flew to New York City—and I can honestly say, there’s no place like it during the holidays. The entire city sparkles with festive magic, from dazzling lights to cozy markets and iconic shows. Whether you’re visiting for the first time or returning for another festive season, here’s everything you need to know about celebrating Christmas in NYC.

🎄 The Iconic Rockefeller Christmas Tree

No holiday trip to New York is complete without a visit to the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree. Towering above the skating rink, this tree is truly a symbol of the season. Watching the lights come to life was absolutely breathtaking. Expect crowds, but also an unforgettable moment of festive joy.

🛍️ Exploring a New York Christmas Market

One of my favorite experiences was walking through a classic New York Christmas market. I visited the Bryant Park Winter Village, filled with artisan stalls, hot chocolate stands and unique gifts. It’s the perfect place to find last-minute presents or simply soak in the holiday spirit.

Other great Christmas markets in NYC include:

  • Union Square Holiday Market
  • Columbus Circle Holiday Market
  • Grand Central Holiday Fair

Each one offers a different vibe, but all are bursting with festive charm.

Bryant Park isn’t just magical because of its ice rink and Winter Village. It also offers a stunning view of the Empire State Building, especially at sunset or when it’s lit up in festive colors.

🎭 Must-See New York Christmas Shows

If you’re a fan of theater, Christmas is the perfect time to indulge. New York offers some fantastic holiday shows to enjoy, like The Nutcracker by the New York City Ballet, A Christmas Carol on Broadway, and How the Grinch Stole Christmas — a fun and family-friendly performance.

Tip: Book your tickets in advance—they sell out quickly in December.

✨ A Christmas Lights Tour to Remember Dyker Heights

One evening, I joined a guided New York Christmas lights tour through Dyker Heights in Brooklyn. The houses here are famous for their over-the-top decorations—think life-size Santas, glowing reindeer, and twinkling displays synced to music. It felt like stepping into a Hallmark movie!

We went to Dyker Heights on our own, and taking the subway from Manhattan to Brooklyn at night gives you a stunning view of the Manhattan skyline—definitely something you shouldn’t miss! Once you’re there, you can walk around freely and just soak in all the crazy, yet beautiful, lights and decorations. For the way back, we took a taxi, but there are also plenty of guided tours available.

The lights in Dyker Heights are absolutely crazy! I’ve never seen so many extravagant decorations. They must cost a fortune to set up! Each neighborhood has its own unique sparkle.

🌅 Catch the Sunset Glow at Rockefeller Center

The best time to visit Rockefeller Center is during sunset, when the sky is painted with warm hues and the city lights begin to sparkle, creating a truly magical atmosphere. To make the most of your experience, be sure to purchase your ticket well in advance, as it can get very busy—especially during the holiday season. Once you reach the top, the panoramic views of Manhattan and beyond are absolutely breathtaking, offering unforgettable photo opportunities and a moment to soak in the vibrant energy of New York City.
