One of the biggest questions when planning a visit is whether you can get to Dyker Heights without joining a tour.
Yes, you absolutely can.
We visited Dyker Heights independently and used public transportation to travel there from Manhattan.
There isn’t a subway station directly in the middle of the main Christmas lights area, so you should expect to walk after getting off the subway.
Depending on where you’re coming from in Manhattan, your exact route will vary. I recommend checking Google Maps on the day of your visit because subway services and schedules can change.
For us, doing the trip independently worked well because we could explore the neighborhood at our own pace instead of following a tour group.
After seeing the lights, we decided to take a taxi back rather than return by public transport. After spending the evening walking around in the cold, this was a much more comfortable way to end the night.
My tip for getting there
Use public transportation on your way to Dyker Heights when you still have plenty of energy, and consider taking a taxi or rideshare back to Manhattan afterwards.
It costs more, of course, but after an evening of walking around Brooklyn in winter, we appreciated the convenience.
Best Streets for the Dyker Heights Christmas Lights
You don’t need an exact itinerary to experience Dyker Heights.
Part of the fun is simply walking through the neighborhood and discovering the displays as you go.
However, if you have limited time, focus on the area around:
11th Avenue to 13th Avenue
and
83rd Street to 86th Street
This is where you’ll find many of the elaborate displays Dyker Heights is famous for.
Once you’re there, keep exploring the surrounding blocks as well. Decorations can change from year to year because these are private homes rather than permanent attractions.
Remember that people actually live here. Stay on public sidewalks, don’t enter private gardens or driveways and try to keep noise to a minimum, especially later in the evening.
When Is the Best Time to See the Dyker Heights Christmas Lights?
The Christmas season is obviously the best time to visit Dyker Heights, with December being the key month for seeing the neighborhood illuminated.
For the full experience, visit after dark.
Seeing all the lights illuminated against the night sky is completely different from walking through the neighborhood during daylight.
If possible, I would avoid arriving extremely late at night. Dyker Heights is a residential neighborhood, and individual homeowners decide when their decorations are illuminated.
Also remember that the closer you get to Christmas, the more popular the area can become.
If you’d prefer a slightly calmer experience, visiting earlier in December or on a weekday may be a better option than going on a weekend immediately before Christmas.
Are the Dyker Heights Christmas Lights Free?
One of the best things about visiting Dyker Heights independently is that you don’t need an admission ticket simply to walk through the neighborhood and see the Christmas decorations from the public streets.
That makes it a great addition to a New York Christmas trip, especially when so many other attractions in the city can quickly become expensive.
You will, however, need to budget for transportation between Manhattan and Brooklyn.

We visited independently, and I’m glad we did.
Exploring without a tour gave us the freedom to stop wherever we wanted, spend more time taking photos and simply walk through the streets at our own pace.

What to Wear When Visiting Dyker Heights
This might sound obvious, but dress warmly.
You’ll be spending most of your visit outdoors and walking through residential streets. New York evenings in December can feel very cold, particularly when you’re outside for a long period.
I recommend wearing:
- a warm winter coat
- comfortable walking shoes
- warm socks
- gloves
- a scarf
- a hat or beanie
Comfortable shoes are particularly important because the visit involves more walking than you might initially expect.
Tips for Visiting the Dyker Heights Christmas Lights
A little preparation makes the trip much easier.

Is Dyker Heights Worth Visiting at Christmas?
For me, yes.
Manhattan has plenty of spectacular Christmas decorations, but Dyker Heights feels completely different.
The scale of some of the displays is incredible, and walking through an otherwise residential Brooklyn neighborhood filled with Christmas lights was one of the most memorable experiences of our New York Christmas trip.
The biggest disadvantage is the journey from Manhattan. You’ll need to dedicate a good part of your evening to getting there, exploring the neighborhood and returning.
But if you’re spending several days in New York during the Christmas season, I think it’s worth making the trip.
It also gives you an opportunity to venture beyond Manhattan and experience a completely different side of New York City.
